Man City Defeat Chelsea in Season Opener
Manchester City kicked off their English Premier League (EPL) title defence with a 2-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday, 18 August, spoiling Enzo Maresca’s debut as Blues manager.
Forward Erling Haaland marked his 100th appearance for City with his 91st goal at Stamford Bridge Stadium in London, England, calmly finishing after a deflected cross from Bernardo Silva in the 18th minute.
Despite missing several key players due to extended mid-year breaks, the Citizens displayed their usual composure and control throughout the match.
Chelsea, struggling with squad cohesion and without several new signings, had moments of promise. They thought they had equalised just before half-time, but Nicolas Jackson’s effort was ruled out as offside after Man City goalkeeper, Ederson, spilled Cole Palmer’s shot.
As the visitors pushed for a leveller in the second half, City continued to create chances, with Mateo Kovacic sealing the win in the 84th minute. The former Chelsea midfielder capitalised on a loose ball, driving forward before firing a powerful shot past Blues goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez.
While Chelsea showed glimpses of potential under Maresca, City’s experience and quality ultimately made the difference, extending their unbeaten EPL run to 24 games.
