Man City Lose Community Shield to Arsenal
Arsenal claimed a 4-1 victory on penalties against Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday, 6 August, marking themselves as strong contenders for the 2023/2024 season.
While the match – which was held at Wembley Stadium in London, England – ended in a 1-1 draw, many spectators in the stands had expected the Citizens to walk away with a win as they had held possession of the ball for most of the game.
The first goal of the match only came at the 77th-minute mark, as City midfielder Cole Palmer was able to finally follow through on a sliver of an opportunity with the help of his team-mate, Kevin De Bruyne.
Striker Leandro Trossard was able to score an equaliser goal for the Gunners in the 101th minute with an assist from his team-mate, midfielder Bukayo Saka.
For Arsenal, who had lost all three of their previous meetings with last season’s title rivals, it was a satisfying win.
“For us, it’s a statement,” Gunners goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale, said during the post-match press conference. “It’s a marker to know we can go and beat Man City in a big game when it matters. I’m not sure what it will be like this season but that mental block is gone. We’re ready to push on now.”
