Man United Facing Possible Europa League Demotion
Manchester United and Nice might not be able to compete in next season’s Europa League due to UEFA’s ownership regulations.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos company – which owns complete control of Nice and a 27.7% stake in United – is confident that they will be able to find a solution. However, they only have until Monday, 3 June, for all clubs to satisfy UEFA’s rules before they are officially ruled out.
The Red Devils qualified for the Europa League by winning the FA Cup final 2-1 against Manchester City on Saturday, 25 May. However, they may see that victory slide through their fingers as they risk being demoted to the Europa Conference League if Ineos loses the case.
Man United finished the 2023/2024 season in eighth place in the English Premier League while Nice placed fifth in Ligue 1, putting the French club higher than the British side in the Europa League rankings.
“We are aware of the position of both clubs and are in direct dialogue with UEFA. We are confident that we have a route forward for next season in Europe,” the Ineos company said in a statement released to the media on Tuesday, 28 May.
