Maponyane’s Thoughts on Firing Zwane
Kaizer Chiefs may have had an unsuccessful 2022/2023 campaign under coach Arthur Zwane, but that doesn’t warrant the latter being fired.
That’s according to retired Chiefs player Marks Maponyane, who during a recent interview was asked if Zwane should be sacked for not only leading the club to a disappointing fourth-place finish on the Premier Soccer League rankings, but also for their missing out on the CAF Champions League.
“You cannot think you’re changing Arthur Zwane and suddenly you’re going to get the first trophy,” answered Maponyane. “Let me ask you the question instead of answering your question: if your bus is broken and people are stranded in this bus, do you change drivers or you just repair the bus?”
He continued, focusing on the team’s synergy or lack thereof: “There needs to be a flow. It always looks very lost when it comes to the last third because no one has confidence and cannot take responsibility to put the ball in the back of the net.”
From the sound of things, Maponyane believes the fault lies with the players rather than with Zwane. However, a coach is only as good as his team (and vice-versa), so here’s hoping Zwane can prove his naysayers wrong when his men take on Cape Town City tomorrow, Saturday 20 May.
