McCarthy Eyes Amakhosi Role Amid Chiefs Coaching Crisis
Benni McCarthy has publicly declared his ambition to manage Kaizer Chiefs, the club he supported as a child.
Speaking at the launch of his autobiography on Wednesday, 4 March, the 48-year-old revealed that leading the Soweto giants remains a career priority alongside his goal of becoming Manchester United’s head coach.
Despite a legendary playing career that included a UEFA Champions League title, McCarthy never played for the Naturena-based side. He admitted, “Chiefs and Manchester United were in my heart and I always wanted to play for or coach both those clubs.”
While he eventually represented rivals Orlando Pirates, he remains optimistic about a future at Chiefs, stating, “Maybe the dream of … managing them is still very much possible.”
The timing of McCarthy’s interest coincides with a severe slump for Amakhosi. Under interim duo Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef, the team has fallen to sixth place and exited multiple cup competitions.
With McCarthy’s proven track record – including an MTN8 trophy and a historic second-place finish with AmaZulu – he is viewed as a primary candidate to lead a recovery. Currently leading the Kenyan national team, McCarthy’s elite experience at Manchester United makes him a frontrunner for the demanding role.
