Meet Jimothy: The Viral Raccoon Sensation

A uniquely shaped raccoon in Seattle has captured international attention after going viral on social media.

Filmed scampering across a lawn, the animal was named by local resident Kiana Hall, who initially mistook him for a feline. Hall later admitted to a local publication, “He just looked like a ‘Jimothy’ to me.”

Believed to suffer from a rare genetic condition called short spine syndrome, Jimothy possesses a shortened, compressed frame. Despite his unusual appearance, wildlife experts note that the creature remains healthy and remarkably agile. Raised in a local backyard alongside supportive siblings, his distinctive scamper quickly transformed him into a global phenomenon.

The animal’s fame has spawned custom video games, merchandise, artwork, and an official city council proclamation declaring “Jimothy Summer”. Prominent entities have actively capitalised on his popularity, ranging from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to gaming franchises and political campaigns, with a White House social media post sparking debate after depicting him wearing a Make America Great Again hat.

However, amidst the overwhelming enthusiasm surrounding this lighthearted sensation, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has issued safety warnings, instructing the public to “leave him alone” and refrain from approaching the wild creature.
