Mini Drone Blurs Out of Sight
Engineers at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, have developed an unconventional drone that uses rapid rotation to blend into its surroundings.
Dubbed the “Phantom Twist”, the miniature aircraft rotates up to 25 times per second, exploiting the limits of human visual perception to dissolve into a faint, semi-transparent smudge.
Unlike traditional quadcopters that feature stationary bodies, the Phantom Twist operates on a single motor and propeller. The propeller spins in one direction while the rest of the frame spins in the opposite direction, eliminating stationary components. According to researchers, the finished prototype is about 10 times less visually perceptible than a standard quadcopter.
“The human eye takes time to accumulate signals, roughly analogous to the exposure time of a camera,” explained co-author Emma Alexander. “Because this new drone is almost entirely transparent, its few opaque components are visually averaged with the background for an overall appearance of a slight haze.”
To achieve the optimal layout, the team used artificial intelligence (AI) to evaluate roughly 20 000 stable flight configurations. The optimisation algorithms rearranged the motor, circuit board, batteries, and counterweights across simulated real-world backgrounds to prevent components from visually overlapping while spinning.
The study’s results were presented last Thursday, 16 July, at the Robotics: Science and Systems 2026 conference in Sydney, Australia. The technology offers promising applications for monitoring wildlife, surveying environments, and inspecting infrastructure with minimal visual disruption. Future iterations will focus on reducing propeller noise and using clearer materials to further enhance its stealth capabilities.
