Mjokes, 46, Dies in Car Accident
South Africa has been plunged into mourning following the unexpected death of kwaito musician and Trompies member, Emmanuel Mojalefa “Mjokes” Matsane.
In a statement posted to Twitter on Sunday, 23 May, Kalawa Jazmee – a local record label over which Mjokes served as the director – confirmed the 46-year-old musician passed away early that morning in a car accident.
The accident occurred hours after Trompies performed at the Disoufeng Pub and Restaurant in Meadowlands, Gauteng.
Speaking to media outlets, Eugene Mthethwa – who, along with Mjokes, has been part of Trompies since its formation in 1995 – explained that he thought it was a hoax seeing posts with #RIPMjokes trending on social media.
However, after phoning Mjokes’ wife, it was tragically clear to Mthethwa that his friend was indeed gone.
He mourned: “It’s a sad day for us … I don’t know where to start telling my kids that you spent your last moments with [sic], talking to them more than you did with us last night.”
Details regarding Mjokes’ memorial and funeral services will be announced in due course.
