Mzansi Acapella Group Goes to Coachella

South African acapella group, The Joy, joined Grammy award-winning singer Doja Cat on the main stage of the Coachella festival on Sunday, 14 April.

The 28-year-old American rapper invited the five-piece Mzansi band on stage for a special rendition of her two hit singles, “Acknowledge Me” and “Shutcho”, at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.

Lead vocalist, Duzie, spoke with a local publication shortly after the performance, gushing about the experience of performing with one of the biggest rap stars in the world.

“Doja’s management team connected with our manager Sevi from Black Major. They told us this is something she had been wanting to do since she started following us on our social media platforms a couple of years ago,” Duzie said.

“We love Doja and literally screamed when we heard she wanted us to share the stage of the biggest festival in the world,” he added

Doja Cat – who is privately known as Amala Dlamini – is no stranger to Mzansi, being the daughter of South African actor, Dumisani Dlamini. Despite having never met in person, it seems the songstress was eager to pay tribute to her Zulu heritage with The Joy during the music festival.
