Nedbank Cup: Mamelodi Sundowns Beat Mpheni 2-0

Mamelodi Sundowns are on their way to the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup, following their 2-0 victory over Mpheni Home Defenders on Sunday, 16 April.

Playing at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria, Gauteng, Sundowns kept the ABC Motsepe League outfit on their toes by maintaining 77% possession of the ball for the entirety of the match.

After just eight minutes, the first goal was scored in the Brazilians’ favour by midfielder Tashreeq Matthews, who performed a back-heel kick that sent the ball into the back of the net.

Nineteen minutes later, teammate Bathusi Aubaas fired a right-footed shot from the centre of the box into the bottom left corner to double Sundowns’ lead.

Despite being one man down in the second half after Matthews received a red card, the reigning Premier Soccer League champions ultimately secured a 2-0 win over Mpheni.

The draw for the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals will take place today, Monday 17 February, at the SuperSport studios, where Sundowns will discover who their opponents are.
