Nedbank Cup: Sundowns Outshine Richards Bay 3-2
Mamelodi Sundowns have extended their winning streak to 12-0 after scoring a 3-2 Nedbank Cup victory over Richards Bay at Loftus Versveld on Tuesday night, 7 February.
The Brazilians opened the scoreboard at the 11th minute with a goal from Peter Shalulile. Plucky Richards Bay took on their hosts with surprising vigour, equalising the score with a penalty shot by Nkanyiso Zungu 19 minutes later.
Sundowns responded in kind in the second half: Mosa Lehaba struck in the 46th minute and Shalile scored again nine minutes later, chalking up the score to 3-1.
Despite a consolatory goal from Richards Bay’s Katleho Makateng in the 90th minute, Sundowns ultimately walked away with the win, allowing them to progress to the last 16 round of the Nedbank Cup.
Coach Rhulani Mokwena praised his team for their performance, as well as for their 12th consecutive win in all competitions.
“That’s our story the entire season, we create a lot of chances,” he said. “I thought we played really, really well. It is what it is. We showed very good character. We have to have this mentality where we dig deep. It was a good result.”
