Nigeria: Chef Cooks Her Way into Record Books
The Guinness World Records (GWR) have officially bestowed the honour of the “longest solo cooking session” record to a Nigerian chef who took to the kitchen for over 93 hours last month.
Hilda Baci started her attempt at midday on 11 May at the upmarket Amore Gardens in Lekki, Nigeria. Her final time was confirmed by GWR on Tuesday, 13 June.
Over the course of roughly four days, the 26-year-old hopeful cooked non-stop, preparing more than 100 different, but mostly Nigerian, dishes until she had clocked approximately 100 hours.
Baci explained that her record attempt was borne out of a desire to do something “out of the ordinary” and “to put Nigeria on the map, to put young African women on the map.”
She used her breaks to nap or visit the bathroom, and was permitted one assistant as per the GWR regulations. Despite cooking for such an extended period of time, she was docked seven hours – marking her official time at 93 hours and 11 minutes – for taking breaks longer than guidelines allowed.
Even with the setback, Baci still managed to surpass the previous record of 87 hours and 45 minutes set by Indian chef Lata Tondon in 2019.
