OL Lyonnes, Fenerbahçe Draw 1-1 in UCL Play-off First Leg

OL Lyonnes and Fenerbahçe played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League (UCL) play-off tie on Tuesday, 18 August.

The match, held at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, saw both sides vying for a place in the competition’s group stage.

OL Lyonnes took the lead in the 40th minute, courtesy of striker Loïs Openda’s close-range header.

However, Fenerbahçe equalised shortly, seven minutes after half-time commenced, whereby forward Mason Greenwood struck a powerful shot into the top corner.

Despite further chances for both teams, including Openda hitting the post and Fenerbahçe’s Ederson denying OL Lyonnes’ Corentin Tolisso, neither side could find a winning goal. Not even the newly-signed Romelu Lukaku, who made his debut for Fenerbahçe in the 82nd minute, could change the Turkish outfit’s fortunes for the better.

The tie remains finely balanced, with the deciding return leg set for next Wednesday, 26 August, in Lyon, France. The winner of this encounter will ultimately earn a spot in the UCL group stage.
