Oxlade Reflects on Racism, Industry Struggles and Love
Nigerian singer Oxlade has opened up about receiving racial abuse, facing challenges within the music industry and feeling more appreciated abroad than at home.
In an interview with the “Datebizz” podcast on Monday, 14 October, the 27-year-old artist discussed how an incident in Monaco – where he was racially abused – inspired the title of his debut album, “Oxlade From Africa”.
For Oxlade, real name Ikuforiji Olaitan, the experience heightened his awareness of the stigma that Africans face internationally and led him to embrace his African identity more deeply.
Olaitan also shared his frustrations with the Nigerian music industry, where he claims some veterans have attempted to undermine his career. He expressed his dislike for those trying to “play god” with his future, often over personal, non-music-related issues.
Despite the unfortunate incident, his hit single, “Kulosa”, recently earned diamond certification in France, further solidifying his growing international presence.
