Paris Hilton Slammed for Vacation in Hawaii Amid Wildfires
Socialite Paris Hilton is feeling the wrath of social media after being caught vacationing in Maui, Hawaii with her husband and son, despite recent wildfires devastating the region.
Several international publications released images on Monday, 14 August, of the carefree couple scampering around the beach over the weekend, ignoring warnings to stay away from the area.
Hawaii has been battling a series of deadly wildfires that have swept rapidly through the islands since Tuesday, 8 August. The Hawaii Tourism Authority asked tourists to evacuate the island the following day in order to free up desperately needed resources for its own citizens.
A week later, the fires are believed to have been mostly contained, allowing the rescue and recovery efforts to truly progress. So far, 99 people have been confirmed as dead due to the blazes, but the number is expected to rise as the search for loved ones continues.
Hilton – who reportedly arrived on the same day the fires started and elected to stay at a resort in Wailea that is roughly 48 kilometres from the severely impacted town of Lahaina – seems to have ignored the evacuation order.
While some have slammed the heiress for her callous behaviour, sources have suggested that Hilton’s family may have provided support to those affected by gathering supplies.
