Pirates, Chiefs AND Sundowns Eyeing Stellies Star

At least three clubs are in the race to sign Stellenbosch FC midfielder Junior Mendieta.

According to reports, Mendieta has apparently landed on the radars of Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 29-year-old has propelled Stellenbosch to new heights during the latest season, especially during their current Nedbank Cup campaign, where he has helped to score eight goals and contribute eight goal assists.

Chiefs could do well to sign Mendieta, although they would do better to sign defenders as they’ve been criticised for their weak defence for the last year or so. In the case of Pirates, their weakness lies in the lack of effective goalscorers, a gap which the Argentine national could fill.

As for Sundowns, the reigning Premier Soccer League champions are doubtlessly only looking to add (and retain) the cream of the crop, which Mendieta is perhaps lucky enough to be counted as.

Neither club has indicated their interest in him, but with the upcoming transfer window opening in June, we’ll see where Mendieta will end up.
