Police Investigate Anti-Benitez Banner
A sinister banner seemingly targeted at former Liverpool coach, Rafael Benitez, has prompted a police investigation into the matter.
According to a statement from the Merseyside police, the banner – with the words “We know where you live. Don’t sign” written on it – was hung over a bushy wall near Benitez’s residence in the Wirral village of Caldy on Monday, 28 June.
Detective Inspector Darren Taylor also commented: “This message has understandably caused some distress and worry for residents in the area. Due to the football language used, we suspect that it was aimed at Rafa Benitez – but whoever placed the message left it outside the wrong house.”
Benitez is facing fierce opposition from Everton fans after it emerged that the 61-year-old Spaniard was a frontrunner to replace Carlo Ancelotti, who resigned to become coach of Real Madrid earlier this month.
Their hatred towards Benitez dates back to 2007, when he described Everton as a “small club”. Although he clarified in a 2011 interview that he was referring to the club’s style of play, Toffees fans have yet to forgive and forget his jibe.
