PSL Postpones Chippa United-Royal AM Match

An upcoming Betway Premiership match between Chippa United and Royal AM has been postponed.

On Monday, 6 January, Chippa released a statement, in which they revealed that their match with Royal AM – initially scheduled for this Saturday, 11 January at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape – will no longer take place.

“This decision, made by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) at the last minute, comes after all necessary arrangements, including logistics and venue preparation, had been finalised,” the statement reads. “Despite the disruption caused, no reasons for this postponement have been provided to us.”

According to the latest reports, the PSL postponed the match after Royal AM’s players refused to return to training  due to the non-payment of their salaries from last December.

This is just one of several financial challenges that Thwihli Thwahla has encountered in recent months. Last November, it emerged that club president, Shauwn Mkhize, owed the South African Revenue Service approximately R40 million in tax debt, thus impacting the club’s operations.

Additionally, Royal AM has not yet settled a R15-million payment owed to their former striker, Samir Nurkovic, leading to a FIFA-imposed ban on signing new players.

Details regarding the rescheduled date and venue for the match between Chippa and Royal AM have not yet been announced.
