Ramaphosa Encourages Unity on Africa Day
Cyril Ramaphosa, president of South Africa, called for the African continent to embrace unity on Africa Day, Thursday 25 May, while also praising the resilience displayed by Africans over the recent years.
The annual celebratory day acts as a memorial for the establishment of the Organisation for African Unity (OAU) in 1963, which is now known as the African Union. This year marks the union’s 60th anniversary.
Ramphosa spoke with the media at the Maropeng Cradle of Humankind in Krugersdorp, Gauteng, saying: “Africa Day is a celebration of our unity and a moment for us to reflect on our shared responsibility in building an Africa that is peaceful, prosperous and united.”
The 70-year-old leader went on to acknowledge some of the hardships faced by the continent during the recent coronavirus pandemic, while also pointing out some of the successes that can be achieved when African countries chose to work together.
“We learned as Africans that we have the means, the capacity and the political will to develop and implement solutions to Africa’s challenges,” he added before going on to remind the gathered dignitaries about the original charter of the OAU.
“It called for the building of understanding and solidarity between African countries, to build a larger unity ‘transcending ethnic and national differences’”, he said firmly.
