Regional Chaos as US-Israeli Strikes Topple Khamenei

The Middle East has descended into a multi-front war following a massive United States (US) and Israeli operation, “Operation Epic Fury”, which killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Saturday, 28 February.

While US President Donald Trump claimed on Monday, 2 March, that the mission is “substantially ahead of our time projections”, the conflict is rapidly expanding.

The violence spread to Lebanon on Monday as Israel targeted Hezbollah following rocket attacks. In a chaotic “friendly fire” incident, Kuwaiti forces mistakenly downed three American fighter jets. Meanwhile, Tehran’s retaliatory strikes have hit several Gulf states and a British base in Cyprus.

The economic fallout is severe. With the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed and Qatari gas production halted, energy prices have spiked. “This is not a single overnight operation”, warned General Dan Caine, noting that over 1 000 targets were hit in the first 24 hours.

Domestic support for the gamble remains low. Despite the US’s call for Iranians to “take over your government”, many civilians face a humanitarian crisis.

Adhering to a policy of defiance, Iranian adviser Ali Larijani stated the nation would not negotiate with a president who holds “delusional ambitions”.
