Richards Bay Star, 29, Passes Away

The South African football community has been thrown into mourning following the unexpected death of Richards Bay FC defender, Siphamandla “Spepe” Mtolo.

According to a statement issued by the club, Mtolo was participating in a training session on Tuesday morning, 7 March, when he suddenly collapsed. By the evening, it was confirmed that he had died. He was 29-years-old.

“The club is not in a position to provide further information at this stage,” the statement reads, “and asks that his family’s privacy is respected in this difficult time of bereavement.

“His presence both on and off the field will be solely [sic] missed. Thoughts and prayers of everyone in Richards Bay Football Club are with his family, friends and loved ones.”

Per reports, club officials met with the players on Tuesday to discuss the tragic situation.

Clubs and fans alike around the country have since paid tribute to Mtolo and sent their condolences to his family. Furthermore, a moment of silence will be observed at all upcoming Nedbank Cup and Diski Challenge fixtures this week.
