Ronaldo Hits “Rock Bottom” in Portugal-Slovenia Match

Cristiano Ronaldo could not be happier after Portugal narrowly beat Slovenia on penalties to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA European Championship.

Playing at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, Germany on Monday, 1 July, both sides were deadlocked in a goalless draw. Ronaldo attempted to break the stalemate multiple times throughout the game, but could not find the back of the net due to the stunning shot-stopping efforts of Slovenian goalkeeper, Jan Oblak.

So overwhelmed by the lack of goals on his part, the 39-year-old superstar broke down in tears when Oblak blocked his penalty shot during the first half of stoppage time.

Luckily, Portugal were able to turn their fortunes around in the second half of added time when goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved three consecutive Slovenian penalties, thus giving his side a crucial victory.

In a post-match interview, Ronaldo admitted that he hit “rock bottom when the team needed me the most.”

“Sadness at the start is joy at the end. That’s what football is,” he said. “But the important thing is to enjoy it. The team did an extraordinary job. We fought right to the end, and I think we deserved it because we had more authority.”

Portugal will now face France in the quarter-finals at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany this Friday, 5 July.
