Ronwen Williams Nominated for Major FIFA Award
Mamelodi Sundowns star and Bafana Bafana captain, Ronwen Williams, is in the running for yet another award.
On Thursday, 28 November, the nominees for Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper – awarded each year by the eponymous soccer governing body to the top-performing goalkeeper – were announced.
Eleven players, including Italy’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, Brazil’s Ederson and France’s Mike Maignan, are vying for the prestigious accolade.
Williams was revealed as one of the nominees, and is the only player from Africa who appears on the list.
The 32-year-old’s nomination contributes to quite the phenomenal year. This follows an exceptional, title-winning 2023/24 season with Sundowns, as well as his role in the team’s victory in the inaugural African Football League championship.
In addition to being honoured Footballer of the Season by the Premier Soccer League and receiving the COSAFA Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year award, Williams was also nominated for the Yashin Trophy at the 2024 Ballon d’Or awards (although he lost to Argentina’s Emiliano Martínez, who also features on FIFA’s list).
