South Africa: Three of Six Prison Escapees Recaptured

Law enforcement services in Cape Town, Western Cape are currently looking for three men who escaped from the Athlone Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Wednesday 11 October.

The three men are part of a group of six prisoners who absconded from a holding cell, while waiting to be transported back to Pollsmoor Prison after their respective appearances in court earlier that same day.

According to reports, the first escapee was immediately rearrested while two other prisoners were tracked down and recaptured a few hours later. The remaining three men who are at large – named Vuyani Bonkolo, Khaya Supulana, and Khuma Ningo – are considered armed and dangerous.

“The search for three of the outstanding escapees continues with various addresses visited and clues being pursued, but without success thus far,” Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie, a spokesperson for the provincial police department, told a local publication today.

“They stand accused of serious offences such as murder, attempted murder, assault, and robberies aggravated [sic], as well as the possession of stolen property,” he included.

Pojie has also asked members of the public to not approach any of the men if they are spotted, but to rather contact the relevant authorities who will handle the matter appropriately.
