South African Film “The Last Ranger” Shines at Oscars

South African short film “The Last Ranger” made history as the first isiXhosa-language film nominated for an Academy Award.

Despite the film not winning Best Live Action Short Film at the 97th Oscars – which were held on Sunday, 2 March in Hollywood, Los Angeles – its journey has been a triumph for African storytelling.

Directed by Cindy Lee, “The Last Ranger” tackles rhino poaching while highlighting the role of Xhosa women in wildlife conservation. Lead actress Avumile Qongqo portrays Khuselwa – a ranger mentoring a young girl, played by Liyabona Mroqoza – when they are ambushed by poachers.

The film won accolades at the Pan African Film Festival, San Diego International Film Festival, and Cordillera Film Festival, qualifying for the Oscars. Co-produced by Anele Mdoda and Adam Thal, the film drew international attention, with major outlets predicting its win.

Mdoda and the cast dazzled on the red carpet, wearing culturally inspired outfits. The event, hosted by Conan O’Brien, saw “Anora” win Best Picture along with a slew of other films receiving recognition.

While “The Last Ranger” didn’t claim an Oscar, it cemented its legacy, elevating South African cinema on the world stage.
