South Africa’s President DOESN’T Need You to Send Him Money
Cyril Ramaphosa, president of South Africa (SA), has issued a statement warning the public against a scam in which people have impersonated him and are asking for money.
“The president does NOT request any funds or endorse any payments or contracts between third parties, whether through websites, adverts, social media, emails, letters, texts or phone conversations,” the Presidency communicated via Twitter on Wednesday, 21 June.
“If you have already received any such communication, you are advised to terminate all further contact with the scammers, and, in the event that you have sent them funds, contact law enforcement immediately,” the alert added.
According to reports, cybercrime and impersonation fraud are on a sharp rise in South Africa, with one publication going on to say that they have increased by as much as 356% between April 2022 and April 2023.
Another publication revealed that a second scam had also been making its rounds: a website that has been fraudulently inviting applications for positions at Stats SA. The organisation has reiterated that it uses its own two platforms for recruitment, and job seekers should be cautious about other avenues.
With the rise in cybercrime and scams, people should be vigilant with the information they give out, or who they agree to send money to.
