Sundowns Appoint Komphela as Senior Coach
Steve Komphela is back in the coaching seat, and this time it’s Mamelodi Sundowns who will be receiving his guidance once again.
Last week, Sundowns abruptly sacked coach Rhulani Mokwena after he apparently failed to meet the club’s set targets last season. However, differences between the two parties have also been reported as the reason for Mokwena’s firing.
On Saturday, 6 July, the Brazilians confirmed that Komphela – who previously managed the team from 2020 to 2023 – would be joining the Gauteng-based club as a senior coach.
“I am very excited to be back at Mamelodi Sundowns, where I was always inspired and treated with respect and love,” said the 57-year-old tactician. “I am committed to contributing to the club achieving its goals in SA and on the African continent.”
In his role as a senior coach, Komphela will support Manqoba Mngqithi – who is currently serving as the team manager on an interim basis until a permanent candidate is appointed – along with the technical team during the upcoming season.
