Superstars Rema and Burna Boy Receive Prestigious Awards
Nigerian icons Rema and Burna Boy have both received inaugural Billboard Afrobeats awards in honour of their recent artistic endeavours.
The distinguished awards ceremony took place on Sunday, 19 November, at various venues across California, with some musicians choosing to be there via video, while others strutted their stuff down the red carpets.
Rema attended the event in person alongside Selena Gomez as the two accepted their joint award of “Best Afrobeats Song” for their hit collaborative single, “Calm Down”.
“This honour for ‘Calm Down’ is a celebration of unity and the global domination of Afrobeats,” Rema said to the gathered crowd before thanking several people and his fans for their support.
Gomez made sure the spotlight stayed firmly on her collaborator, who originally wrote and sang the hit single, which she later remixed.
“This is honestly Rema’s doing. He chose me to be a part of such an incredible song,” she said firmly before sharing her thanks.
Burna Boy, on the other hand, was recognised as the “Best Afrobeats Act”. The singer opted out of attending but chose to send in a prerecorded video message, in which he told his fans: “The future’s bright… This is just the tip of the iceberg but you’re gonna see the whole vision soon.”
