Thando Buthelezi Reflects on Loan Move to Richards Bay

Mamelodi Sundowns attacking midfielder, Thando Buthelezi, has shared his thoughts about being loaned out to Richards Bay FC.

Buthelezi joined the Premier Soccer League giants during the 2022/23 season, making one appearance for the team when they defeated Marumo Gallants 3-1 in the Nedbank Cup final. Since then, he has struggled to secure regular playing time, remaining in a sort of limbo.

Two months ago, the 21-year-old player was loaned to Richards Bay FC, where he has made three appearances in the ongoing 2024/25 season.

“[Coach Brandon Truter] trusts me, but obviously, I have to adjust to the style of play at Richards Bay because this is where I am right now,” Buthelezi explained in an interview with a local soccer outlet (published on Sunday, 17 November).

He also opened up about his desire to make a strong impression and hopefully gain more playing time at the club before returning to Sundowns:

“[Truter is] pushing me a lot because as much as I left home [parent club], there’s someone who trusts me and who admires the way I play. So, I just hope that I get more minutes so that I can go back home.”
