“The Idol” Cancelled After One Cringe-Worthy Season
Home Box Office (HBO) has made the wise decision to officially cancel the heavily criticised television series, “The Idol”, after just one season.
“We’re pleased by the strong audience response,” a spokesperson for HBO told an international publication on Monday, 28 August.
However, it appears that the strong response was not enough to keep the provocative show on the airways, as the statement continued: “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season.”
Described by one international publication as “one of the worst programs ever made”, “The Idol” starred Lily-Rose Depp and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye in a hyper-cynical portrayal of the music industry.
Despite having a stellar team behind it – including “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson – the series has received a slew of entertainingly harsh reviews since it first aired in early June this year.
The show’s audience seemed to take particular exception to its awkward explicit scenes, as another news outlet described Tesfaye unzipping his trousers “with all the energy and sexual enticement of Gollum scurrying for a fish.”
Whether the viewers simply didn’t “get” the supposedly ironic portrayal of the showbiz industry; or the series simply missed the mark altogether, most people will be happy to know that they won’t need to sit through a second season of the cringe-inducing show.
