Trans Actress Scores Emmy Nod for “Pose”
Actress Mj Rodriguez has made history after becoming the first transgender woman to score an Emmy nomination for best actress.
On Tuesday, 12 July, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences released its list for the 2021 Emmy Awards. Rodriguez – who stars as Blanca on the television drama, “Pose” – scored a nod in the Outstanding Lead Actress category for the role.
“Pose” centers around New York City’s drag ball culture in the 1980s-90s, and boasts a largely transgender main cast.
Speaking to a US media outlet, the 30-year-old actress gushed about her nomination, and what it means for the LGBTQIA+ community.
She said: “I do believe this is a pivotal moment. There’s never been a trans woman who has been nominated as a leading outstanding actress and I feel like that pushes the needle forward so much for now the door to be knocked down for so many people – whether they be male or trans female, gender non-conforming, LGBTQIA+, it does not matter.”
Rodriguez added: “I’m a human at the end of the day. All I wanted was the world to see me, I wanted them to see that I had something to offer.”
