UEFA Nations League A: Spain Beat Switzerland 3-2

Spain pulled out all the stops to beat Switzerland 3-2 in the sixth and final round of the UEFA Nations League A group stage on Monday night, 18 November.

Playing before 21 000 fans at Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain were the clear favourites to secure the win. However, their Group A opponents gave them a stiff challenge throughout the game.

The match started with a high tempo as both teams sought to assert their dominance early on. In the 32nd minute, winger Yeremy Pino right-footed a shot into the centre of the goalbox, giving the Spaniards a 1-0 lead.

It was only in the second half that Switzerland levelled the score, thanks to a right-footed shot from forward Joël Monteiro in the 63rd minute. Five minutes later, however, Spain retaliated with a goal from winger Bryan Gil.

Although Switzerland’s Andi Zeqiri successfully converted a penalty in the 85th minute, substitute Bryan Zaragoza secured a last-minute penalty for Spain in stoppage time, allowing them to win the match 3-2.

Finishing with 16 points on the Group A rankings, Spain are through to the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Switzerland are in last place with two points. As a result, they have been relegated to second-tier League B.
