UEFA Nations League: Huijsen Called Up to Spain Squad

Bournemouth centre-back, Dean Huijsen, has been called up to join Spain’s UEFA Nations League squad, to replace injured centre-back Inigo Martinez.

On Monday, 17 March, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) released a statement, in which they provided an update regarding Martinez:

“Inigo Martinez has been ruled out of the Spanish National Team squad [sic] due to a knee injury, according to a medical report from his club FC Barcelona.”

As a result, said the RFEF, coach Luis de la Fuente has called up a replacement in the form of Huijsen.

Born in the Netherlands and raised in Spain, Huijsen developed his skills in the youth systems of Malaga and Juventus. He joined Bournemouth as a senior player in 2024, where he has netted two goals in 27 appearances across all competitions.

While he previously represented La Roja at an under-21 level, this will be the 19-year-old’s first time representing his country at a senior level.

Spain will take on the Netherlands in the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final at Stadion Feijenoord in the Dutch city of Rotterdam this Thursday, 20 March.
