UEFA Scold Mourinho With 4-Match Ban
Jose Mourinho has been officially suspended from his next four European games for disparaging remarks aimed at a match official during the UEFA Europa League (UEL) final.
On 31 May, the 60-year-old Roma boss was left upset after his side lost the UEL title to Sevilla 4-1 on penalties, after a 1-1 draw into extra time at Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary. He waited for referee Anthony Taylor in the parking lot afterwards and hurtled insults at him, including calling him a “disgrace”.
To make matters worse, Taylor also endured further abuse from angry Roma fans at the airport after the fateful match.
On Thursday, 22 June, the football governing body released a statement with their decision: “To suspend AS Roma head coach, Mr. José Mourinho, for the next four (4) UEFA club competition matches in which he would otherwise participate, for directing abusive language at a match official.”
The punishment also included Roma being forbidden from selling tickets to away fans and fined €5 000 for the team’s “improper conduct”.
Mourinho’s punishment means he will only see the last two group stage matches during the 2023/24 UEL season.
