Wolves’ Boss Charged Over Ref Criticism

Wolverhampton Wanderers coach, Nuno Espirito Santo, is facing charges from the Football Association (FA) for his criticism of referee Lee Mason.

The 46-year-old Portuguese Wolves boss had daggers for Mason after their English Premier League match – which they lost 2-1 – against Burnley on 21 December.

Following the game, Santo said: “Honestly I don’t like to say it, but I must say it because I will not feel right: [Mason] does not have the quality to whistle a game in the Premier League.”

Following the harsh words, the FA released a statement on Thursday, 31 December, which said: “Nuno Espirito Santo has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E”

It went on to say: “It is alleged that comments made by [Santo] during a post-match interview constitute improper conduct as they were personally offensive to the match official and/or bring the game into disrepute.”

Santo has until 5 January to respond to the charges.
