Zayn Malik Reveals Why He Left One Direction

Zayn Malik did not hold back when he opened about the reason why he left One Direction.

The beloved boy band – consisting of Malik, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan – was formed in 2010. They were at the height of success, fame and popularity when Malik quit in 2015, leaving 1D on an indefinite hiatus.

In the latest episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast (which was posted on Wednesday, 12 July), the “Dusk Till Dawn” hitmaker got brutally candid with host Alex Cooper about why he left.

“There was a lot of politics going on,” he explained. “Certain people were doing certain things, certain people didn’t want to sign contracts, so I knew something was happening, so I just got ahead of the curve. I was like, ‘I’m just going to get out of here. I think this is done.’”

Describing himself as a “passive dude” in general, Malik stated he was “competitive” when it came to his music, hence his pursuit of a solo career.

“I completely, selfishly wanted to be the first person to go and make my own record, if I’m being completely honest with you … That was the reason, and then there were obviously underlying issues, like within our friendships, too.”

For now, the 30-year-old is focused on both his upcoming music and co-parenting his two-year-old daughter, Khai, with his ex-girlfriend Gigi Hadid.
