Zulu Mkhathini Releases Debut Album
After a four-year hiatus, Mthokozisi “Zulu” Mkhathini is back on the music scene with his debut solo album, “Spirit of Ubuntu”.
The 11-track album – which features a plethora of guest stars including Black Motion, Thulani Zwane and Zama Jobe – was launched last Friday, 27 August, and it comes four years after Mkhathini left the hip-hop group, Dreamteam.
Speaking to a local media outlet recently, the 31-year-old went in-depth about his hiatus and how it influenced the making of “Spirit of Ubuntu”.
He said: “The first thing was just finding [myself]. I spent a lot of time introspecting and speaking to myself and understanding why I’m changing … I was doing music and venturing into business. It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears. It took a lot of courage, discomfort. It took a lot from me and it took time.”
Mkhathini continued, emphasising the album’s central theme: “I’ll do anything to uplift African sounds … My message is speaking about true culture, true tradition, [that] I want to teach. This is my time to teach … I’m accepting growth and change.”
