Carrick Sweats as Wonderkid JJ Gabriel Requests Man U Exit

Michael Carrick has urged caution following the news that prodigy JJ Gabriel has formally requested to leave Old Trafford.

The 15-year-old forward, fresh off a stunning hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut, was missing from the matchday squad during Unite’s 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton on Wednesday, 16 September. The omission came after Gabriel’s representatives submitted a departure request on the eve of the game, citing dissatisfaction with his first-team pathway.

Speaking after the cup exit, the 45-year-old Manchester United manager emphasised the importance of player welfare: “I just think we’ve got to be really careful of the whole situation. He’s a young boy, he’s 15 and the biggest [opportunity] for me definitely, and as a club point of view is looking after our younger players: their welfare, their wellbeing and their exposure.”

European heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona are reportedly monitoring the stand-off. Gabriel, who turns 16 on 6 October, holds an Irish passport, making him legally eligible to bypass post-Brexit restrictions and join a continental club next summer.

With pressure mounting following United’s midweek cup elimination, Carrick must quickly refocus his squad ahead of their crucial English Premier League fixture against Fulham this Sunday, 20 September.
