Questions Swirl Around Wirtz’s Future at Liverpool

Florian Wirtz’s Liverpool career is under the microscope as critical voices grow, with many observers suggesting the club may eventually have to take action on the £116-million signee.

The 23-year-old German playmaker arrived on Merseyside in 2025 with immense expectations, but he has struggled to deliver during the 2026/27 season. Wirtz’s difficult debut season saw him register just seven goals across all competitions.

Following another underwhelming display against Bournemouth last weekend, Wirtz’s form has been seen as lacklustre, with questions raised as to whether he can adapt to the physical demands of the English Premier League.

“What I see is a player who cost a lot of money, played poorly last year, and has had another poor start this year,” said former Reds legend, Dietmar Hamann, during a recent episode of fellow ex-Reds Jamie Carragher’s podcast.

Carragher emphasised the level of expectations within the team: “The gap he’s got to close to justify what people were expecting I almost think is too big … even if he improves a bit, it’s still not what Liverpool thought they were getting. Andoni Iraola’s got a decision to make here.”
