2021/22 is Messi’s Worst Start of Season
Six time Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi, is struggling to find form at Le Parc des Princes since his arrival on Tuesday, 10 August.
It’s been almost three months, and the Argentine forward is still searching for his first Ligue 1 goal, making this season his worst in 15 years.
However, he has netted 3 goals for Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League competition.
La Liga season 2005/06 was the last league season where Messi had to play more than 8 matches before scoring – except in 2019-20, where he missed the start of the season due to injury.
The PSG forward is yet to adapt to the new formation – having been moved from the middle of the field and shifted to the right – with Neymar taking the left and Kylian Mbappe keeping the middle.
The new 4-3-3 system seems to have decreased Messi touching the ball to 40% less than when he was at Barcelona – also, he is no longer positioned as a playmaker for his team-mates to easily find.
