Arsenal Claim Last-Minute Victory over Man United
Arsenal fans were thrilled to end their Sunday evening, 3 September, with a stunning 3-1 victory over Manchester United in stoppage time.
The topsy-turvy game took place at Emirates Stadium in London, England, with pundits expecting the Gunners to claim a comfortable victory on their home turf based on previous performances. However, spectators were kept on the edge of their seats throughout the match as the Red Devils put up a hardy fight.
Man United midfielder, Marcus Rashford, helped the visitors place the first point on the scoreboard at the 27th-minute mark, with help from his teammate Christian Eriksen.
Mere seconds later, Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard equalised the match with some assistance from his quick-footed teammate, Gabriel Martinelli.
By the second half of the game, both sides were eager to break the 1-1 stalemate, keeping both the referee and VAR system busy with a series of reviews. For a moment, it looked like forward Alejandro Garnacho would claim a victory for the visitors but a play-back by the VAR plainly showed him offside.
Six minutes into overtime, newcomer Declan Rice scored his first goal for Arsenal, proving his jaw-dropping price tag of £105 million to be worthwhile. Five minutes later, striker Gabriel Jesus claimed the final point of the match, assisted by Fábio Vieira – and giving the Gunners a glorious game.
