Bafana Bafana Star Dead at 25

South African football has been plunged into deep mourning following the tragic and sudden death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25. The talented defensive midfielder was found dead at a residential property in Schotschekloof, Cape Town, on Saturday morning, 11 July 2026. Western Cape police have since opened an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding his passing, and no further details are available regarding his cause of death.

His untimely death comes just weeks after he represented South Africa on football’s grandest stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he featured in all three group-stage matches to help Bafana Bafana secure a historic berth in the knockout rounds. In honour of his memory, FIFA held an official moment of silence prior to the World Cup quarter-final clash between Norway and England later that Saturday.

Tributes from the highest echelons of the country have flooded in. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his profound grief, stating, “We are grateful for the joy and victories Jayden has given us and his teams as he lived his dreams and held South Africa’s name high on the scoreboards of global sport.”

Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie also lauded the character of the young star, recalling how Adams played against Czechia carrying fresh personal grief. “It was only afterwards that we learnt he had taken to the field that day carrying the fresh grief of losing his grandmother, Marianna,” McKenzie shared. “That moment speaks to a depth of character and professionalism well beyond his years.”
