Bill Cosby Freed from Prison
In a shocking move, a high court in the US state of Pennsylvania has overturned Bill Cosby’s conviction on sexual charges, resulting in his immediate release from jail.
Cosby – who is best known for starring in the ‘80s sitcom, “The Cosby Show” – was convicted in 2018 after dozens of women accused him of sexual misconduct, harassment, drugging and rape dating back to the 1960s.
However, on Wednesday, 30 June, a panel at the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ordered his release from a correctional facility in Shippack, after discovering a discrepancy that violated the 83-year-old comedian’s due process rights.
According to the panel, Cosby’s attorneys struck a non-prosecution deal with a previous district attorney, Bruce Castor, in 2005. The deal was made shortly after the comedian was sued for sexual battery by a woman.
As a result, the deal with Castor should have shielded Cosby from the charges filed against him in 2014 and 2015, which resulted in his 2018 conviction.
Cosby – who served more than two years of his three-to-ten-year sentence – thanked his Twitter followers after his Wednesday release. However, prosecutor Kevin Steele revealed his disappointment in a press statement.
Steele wrote: “My hope is that this decision will not dampen the reporting of sexual assaults by victims … We still believe that no one is above the law – including those who are rich, famous and powerful.”
