Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Boity Thulo’s Freestyle Divides Mzansi Twitter
When it comes to rapping, Boity Thulo is one of those people who garners both acclaim and criticism from the public … but mostly criticism, especially on Twitter.
Ever since she made the transition from acting to rapping a couple of years ago, Thulo’s been praised and roasted for her bars and delivery. Of course, it hasn’t stopped her from trying to improve her spitting game – overall, her efforts still manage to get her mixed reactions.
On Monday, 26 June, the 33-year-old once again split the public in two when she dropped this freestyle in honour of Riky Rick, Costa Titch and AKA, three of the most popular SA rappers who lost their lives in the last two years:
In addition to mentioning those dearly departed hip-hop stars over beat of AKA’s “Mbuzi”, Thulo takes jabs at the country’s economy, loadshedding and the ANC, plus she gives herself the rub for her huge social media following and glam lifestyle.
And dang, you have to give her props for this saucy gem: “Never had to do no squats / ‘Cause God gave me all this booty!”
While others showed appreciation for her freestyle …
… others didn’t take kindly to her name-dropping those rappers, particularly with that line about AKA: “Who would’ve thought a rapper of his statue / Would be seen taking bullets to the head?”
As such, they reckoned that it was distasteful on Thulo’s part to use their names at their expense, as well as that of their families, friends and fans who are still mourning them:
Meanwhile, the rest just wished she stuck to her original day job:
Eish. There’s really no pleasing people, especially if your name is Boity Thulo. Still, we doubt this hubbub is gonna stop her anytime soon!
