Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Gayton McKenzie Buys 200 Tickets to Makhadzi’s Concert

In recent times, some of the world’s biggest musicians have graced the biggest stages in South Africa: Backstreet Boys, Tamia, Shack Attack, Deborah Cox, Westlife, Jason Derulo … the list keeps on growing!

This had led to local talent being overlooked, especially in terms of selling out of concerts – Makhadzi is one such artist who (jokingly) bemoaned this situation.

For months, the “Ghanama” songstress has been promoting her upcoming show, which will be held at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo on 21 December 2024:

So far, Makhadzi has sold a decent amount of tickets (all the Early Bird tickets are sold out on Computicket), but she will need to do more in order to fill up over 45 000 seats.

For comparison’s sake, tickets for US singer Chris Brown’s concert went on sale last week, and it sold out in just two hours. That means over 94 000 fans will flock to see Brown perform at FNB Stadium (SA’s largest stadium, BTW) in Johannesburg, Gauteng on 14 December 2024 – a mere week before Makhadzi’s show.

Naturally, Makhadzi jumped onto Twitter/X to take a dig at this fact:

Roughly, the tweet translates to: “South Africa [is a] movie. So, I must take 10 years to sell out Peter Mokaba Stadium tickets. [You gave] Chris Brown 2 hours…. Buy the tickets before I cry [sic].”

Clearly, Gayton McKenzie – the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, and arguably Mzansi’s favourite politician – didn’t want to see Makhadzi cry. So, to her delight, he tweeted this out:

We love to see it!

Many tweeps agreed, singing McKenzie’s praises:

Some of the comments seem genuine, although we can’t help but wonder if some are laying it on thick in order to score a ticket or two from the guy.

Of course, there were peeps were OBVIOUS about their intentions:

No word so far on how McKenzie will distribute those tickets, but who knows? Perhaps a social media raffle could do the trick, or maybe he’ll give ‘em away to eager fans who show up to Peter Mokaba Stadium on the day of Makhadzi’s concert!

Either way, that’s one way to show support to local artists AND stay in the good graces of the fickle SA Twitter/X population!
