Celeb Twitter Round-Up: Rest in Peace, Tony Cedras
Yet another South African star has been lost to the heavens: jazz musician Tony Cedras passed away on Monday, 29 January at the age of 72.
Cedras’ wife, Tania, confirmed the sad news to a local media outlet on Tuesday, 30 January, saying that the cause of her husband’s death was a consequence of chronic emphysema.
“He was performing in the US and was hospitalised for six months until he came back on Thursday [25 January],” she explained. “Then he died on Monday.”
Born in Elsies River, Cape Town, Cedras – famed for his talent to play an array instruments including the accordion, keyboard and trumpet – made a name for himself as a session player and toured the world. He played with the likes of Hugh Masekela, Paul Simon, Miriam Makeba and Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, among other local and international artists.
Over on Twitter/X, tributes poured in from all quarters for Cedras, praising his abilities, presence and demeanour:
Mabuse also paid tribute to him, which elicited other mournful messages:
Rest in peace and power, Tony Cedras!
