Durban City’s Promotion in Limbo

Durban City FC’s ascent to the Betway Premiership faces uncertainty due to allegations concerning player eligibility. The club, formerly known as Maritzburg United, secured the Motsepe Foundation Championship title with a 1-0 victory over Cape Town Spurs.

However, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has withheld the trophy pending an investigation into the registration of player Saziso Magawana.

Chairman Farook Kadodia contends that the club adhered to all protocols, asserting that Magawana was properly cleared by Marumo Gallants. He also expressed concerns over potential conflicts of interest within the PSL, highlighting that acting CEO Mato Madlala also owns Golden Arrows, a club affected by the league’s decisions.

The PSL has postponed the trophy presentation, citing unresolved disciplinary matters that could impact the final standings. This delay also affects Cape Town Spurs, who, despite their loss, might avoid relegation if Durban City faces sanctions.

As the league’s Disciplinary Committee reviews the case, the football community awaits a resolution that will determine the final standings and promotions.
