GQ Men of the Year Awards Recognise Local Icons

The fourth annual star-studded South African GQ Men of the Year Awards was held this weekend in Sandton, Johannesburg, and featured a selection of Mzansi icons who’ve made a difference in 2022.

The ceremony – which took place at The Leonardo on Saturday, 10 December – was packed with actors, athletes, musicians, politicians, designers, and more who came together to be seen and heard at the glamorous event.

Amongst those recognised was rapper Cassper Nyovest, privately known as Refiloe Maele Phoolo, who walked away with the “Entertainer of the Year” title. The win marks his first real “nod” from GQ Magazine as his “Fill Up” concert series have been making waves around Mzansi.

Musician and producer Zakes Bantwini was awarded “Musician of the Year” which was accepted by his wife, Nandi Madida, on his behalf. It’s unclear why he was unable to make it himself.

Taking to Instagram on Sunday, 11 December, Bantwini said: “This award means a lot to me, especially because it affirms the contribution I’ve made in the music industry; thank you, GQ.”

Also recognised was investigative journalist Devi Sankaree Govender, who walked away with the “Woman of the Year” award, as well as comedian Marc Lottering who was named “Industry Icon of the Year”.
