Is Chelsea Up For Sale?
The rumour mill at Chelsea Football Club has been kicked into overdrive with whispers of a possible sale being on the cards.
Per reports, Chelsea’s owner, Roman Abramovich, after taking a step back from the day-to-day running of the club, is thinking of selling his majority shares in the west London team as he wishes to avoid tarnishing the club’s reputation, due to his links to Russian president Vladimir Putin.
During Abramovich’s 19 years as owner, Chelsea has bagged 18 trophies – three more than any other English team – across multiple competitions.
Swiss billionaire Hansjoerg Wyss claimed in an interview with a Swiss news outlet on Wednesday, 2 March, that he was approached to buy Chelsea for £2 billion.
“Abramovich is currently trying to sell all his villas in England. He also wants to get rid of Chelsea quickly now … Abramovich is asking for far too much at the moment. You know: Chelsea owes him 2 billion pounds. But Chelsea has no money,” the 86-year-old businessman said.
Other sources claim that sports investors and private firms from across the globe are looking to hand in proposals for a potential purchase in the upcoming weeks.
