Jude Bellingham Faces Potential Ban for Inappropriate Gesture
England midfielder, Jude Bellingham, is currently under investigation by UEFA following a controversial gesture during his team’s 2-1 victory over Slovakia in the Euro 2024 last-16 match on Sunday, 30 June.
After scoring a late equaliser, the 21-year-old athlete was seen making a crotch-grabbing gesture towards the benches, which he later clarified on X, formerly known as Twitter, as an inside joke directed at friends present at the game.
Despite his explanation, UEFA is examining whether the gesture breached their conduct rules. The governing body’s investigation focuses on a potential violation of Article 11/2b, which mandates respect for “ethical conduct, loyalty, integrity, and sportsmanship.”
If found guilty, the Real Madrid player could face a suspension, a fine, or both. This situation mirrors past incidents involving Cristiano Ronaldo, who received fines for similar gestures, though he was banned for one match in the Saudi Pro League for an obscene gesture earlier this year.
England’s manager, Gareth Southgate, and Bellingham both await UEFA’s decision, which could take several days. England’s upcoming quarter-final match against Switzerland on Saturday, 6 July, could be impacted if Bellingham is suspended.
The investigation has sparked debate, with critics like Gary Lineker labelling it “ridiculous.” The outcome remains uncertain as UEFA’s disciplinary process continues.
